Things you didn't know about "Boy Meets World"

“Boy Meets World” is a show that originally ran on ABC on Friday nights from September of 1993 through May of 2000. While it was popular during the original run, it has developed a huge following through reruns. I vaguely remember watching it when I was very young, but I did not truly appreciate or understand it until my middle and high school years. Every weekday after I got off the bus I would watch a few episodes on ABC Family, I developed a love for the characters and the lessons they learned. Apparently, I was not the only one because Disney felt confident to make a revamp called “Girl Meets World” which ran for three seasons on the Disney Channel.

Even though I have seen every episode at least five or six times, I knew there had to be some behind-the-scenes facts I did not know. So, I set out to find them. If you are a fan like me this may clear up a few discrepancies in the show. If you are not, why are you still here? Go watch some “Boy Meets World,” I left a one of my favorite episodes below!

There wasn’t supposed to be a Cory, Shawn duo

Sad, right? The two best friends are one of the most iconic parts of the show, but that’s not how it was supposed to happen. Cory was supposed to have two best friends, which is why in the early episodes his lunch table often featured many different sets of kids. None of them stuck though and once Topanga was turned into a central figure of the show the directors let go of their original idea.

This explains Shawn’s sister Stacy

In the fourth episode of the show, “Cory’s Alternative Friends,” Cory attempts to straighten his hair. Which ends in a complete disaster. Shawn tries helping him undo the mess and calls his sister Stacy to see if she knows what to do. After that episode Stacy is never mentioned again. This is because those lines were meant to be delivered by Cory’s other best friend, but the actor did not fit the show so Rider Strong (Shawn) filmed the scene instead.

The problem of disappearing characters was common in the show. Topanga had an older sister only used in one episode and her parents were played by five different actors. Mr. Turner also disappeared after a motorcycle accident in season four. Even Cory’s sister Morgan disappeared for much of season two and three, and when she did return she was played by a different actress.

Cory and Topanga were married because of fans

When the show was cancelled the writers did not know what to do. ABC did not want the characters to be married because they were 20 years old and the network felt that they were too young. But the creators felt like the fans would be disappointed if they did not get the conclusion they had waited so long for. Michael Jacobs, the original creator, suggested an online poll. Fans voted and the couple were married early in the final season.

Mr. Feeny and Dean Bolander

Toward the end of the series Mr. Feeny finally marries Dean Bolander. It turns out that this was old news to the actors. William Daniels (Feeny) and Bonnie Bartlett (Bolander) have been married for over 60 years.

The final scene was only filmed once

The last scene of the series is an absolute tearjerker. Apparently not just for the audience either, the cast cried real tears while filming and could not handle another take. Anyone who has seen it can understand why, Ben Savage (Cory) described it by saying “When they said, ‘Cut!’ on that final take, it was almost like someone was saying, ‘Say goodbye to your childhood.’”

If you’re a fan, did you know any of these facts? If you have never seen the show, what are you still doing here? Watch one of my favorite episodes!
