ONU's Other Mascot

If you attend Ohio Northern University or have ever set foot on campus you might have noticed that we have a lot of ponds. With the ponds come ducks, geese and even a few swans. They are infamous and have found a way to hiss into our hearts. So much so that I have even heard a speech about them. They have their own dedicated twitter account, and everyone sheds a small tear when they go away in the winter. They are an ONU icon.

I remember the day I moved in freshman year my RA commented that she would sometimes let bits of food get stale so she would just have to feed it to the birds at the pond beside our complex. I quickly learned that it was the norm to take your extra food to them. At all times throughout the day you may stumble upon someone hanging out with the birds. If you ask an ONU student or alumni chances are they probably have a story or two about them. It could be that a black swan chased them like this woman. Maybe a goose hissed them for a while. A little duck could have given them a dirty look when they ran out of food. Even if it is none of these I am sure that they have a story of some sort.

People who live in Ada stop by to feed our birds too. Once last year I ran into a mom and her children throwing bits of bread to the ducks. The kids struck up a conversation and we fed the animals together for a while. They unite the Ada and college community, you never know who you will meet and get to know.


If you stop by for a visit at ONU do yourself a favor and bring a little something for the birds around the pond. It is a great way to get outside and enjoy our beautiful campus. You might even run into me sharing my leftover popcorn with them.

    I love the animal life by the pond at Lakeside Apartments. I always think the ducks sound like they are laughing and it makes me happy!

Have you ever thought about how much lettuce you have eaten over the course of your life? As of yesterday I can say I have. In fact I became so interested in the answer that I came up with a way to figure out your (approximate) lettuce count. Here is what I did. First I found out what the serving size of lettuce is. Since there are so many different kinds I decided to use romaine since it is a good middle ground between iceberg and dark greens and I have eaten a variety. It turns out that a serving size is two cups. There are six cups of torn romaine in one head, and there are about 10 leaves per head. This means that a serving size is actually 1.66 leaves. I approximated that one leaf is broken up into seven pieces, so there are about 23.33 pieces of lettuce per entree salad. Or 11.66 pieces in a side salad. Now for the less complicated part. My Pinterest Problem

Often times I picture my future self-walking into a support group and saying: Hello, my name is Emily and I’m addicted to Pinterest . I’m serious. As a person who loves to create, it is literally my kryptonite when I have free time. I can spend hours looking at DIY’s, recipes, drawing inspiration, workouts I’ll never do, and everything else you can think of. But today I’ve been pondering if my “problem” is actually a problem, and I’ll tell you my reasons for why I think it’s really not. First of all, Pinterest has saved me a ton of money. When I think back over the few years I’ve been active on the website I remember a lot of instances when I needed a quick fix, or a solution to those things that you just can’t avoid in everyday life. It has taught me that paint chips make great (free!) dorm decorations. How to get grease off your shirt when you spill lettuce wraps all over yourself. Why women don't have pockets.

This week I would like to address a problem being overlooked all over the world, and that is pockets on women’s clothing. It may seem like a joke, but there is a legitimate argument to be made and I feel that it will be worth taking a few minutes to learn about why there is so much controversy surrounding something so simple. Shoutout to my RD Hailey for her exceedingly accurate reply. I have always been annoyed by the lack of decent pockets on my clothes. It seems really unfair that men have massive pockets big enough for a full size iPad while I am often given tiny pockets or none at all. The final straw came a couple of weeks ago when I discovered that my favorite pair of shorts did have pockets, but they were sewn shut and impossible for me to use.
