YouTube was launched on February 14, 2005 leaving 11 years for a lot to happen. As one of the most popular social media platforms it is almost impossible to avoid which video is trending at any given moment. But that is not all YouTube has to offer, here are 10 interesting facts you may not have known about the website.


 A third of the world

YouTube has over a billion users, meaning that over one third of the internet world’s population is on YouTube.

Half of users are mobile

Over half of YouTube users access it through a smartphone or tablet.

The founder of YouTube created the site after Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl in 2004 during half time. After the event Jawed Karim thought there should be a platform where people could find the video if they wanted to, giving him the inspiration for the platform.

Mystery YouTuber

One of the most popular channels on YouTube is FunToyzCollector and nobody really knows for sure who the content creator is. The videos are unboxings of toys showing only their hands.

When YouTube first launched the company Universal Tube got upset out of fear that users would confuse the two domain names.

Gangnam Style broke the counter

After the music video for Gangnam Style was released it broke the 2,147,483,647 play count limit, forcing the company to rewrite the code and increase the limit to 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 views.

The most watched video is…

You guessed it! Gangnam Style with slightly under 2.5 billion views.

Snake

You can play snake to pass the time while you wait for a buffering video to load.

Most watched non-music video

With over 800 million views Charlie Bit My Finger is the most watched non-music video on YouTube. The brothers have made hundreds of thousands of dollars and they are not even adults yet.

Have you ever thought about how much lettuce you have eaten over the course of your life? As of yesterday I can say I have. In fact I became so interested in the answer that I came up with a way to figure out your (approximate) lettuce count. Here is what I did. First I found out what the serving size of lettuce is. Since there are so many different kinds I decided to use romaine since it is a good middle ground between iceberg and dark greens and I have eaten a variety. It turns out that a serving size is two cups. There are six cups of torn romaine in one head, and there are about 10 leaves per head. This means that a serving size is actually 1.66 leaves. I approximated that one leaf is broken up into seven pieces, so there are about 23.33 pieces of lettuce per entree salad. Or 11.66 pieces in a side salad. Now for the less complicated part. My Pinterest Problem

Often times I picture my future self-walking into a support group and saying: Hello, my name is Emily and I’m addicted to Pinterest . I’m serious. As a person who loves to create, it is literally my kryptonite when I have free time. I can spend hours looking at DIY’s, recipes, drawing inspiration, workouts I’ll never do, and everything else you can think of. But today I’ve been pondering if my “problem” is actually a problem, and I’ll tell you my reasons for why I think it’s really not. First of all, Pinterest has saved me a ton of money. When I think back over the few years I’ve been active on the website I remember a lot of instances when I needed a quick fix, or a solution to those things that you just can’t avoid in everyday life. Why women don't have pockets.

This week I would like to address a problem being overlooked all over the world, and that is pockets on women’s clothing. It may seem like a joke, but there is a legitimate argument to be made and I feel that it will be worth taking a few minutes to learn about why there is so much controversy surrounding something so simple. Shoutout to my RD Hailey for her exceedingly accurate reply. I have always been annoyed by the lack of decent pockets on my clothes. It seems really unfair that men have massive pockets big enough for a full size iPad while I am often given tiny pockets or none at all. The final straw came a couple of weeks ago when I discovered that my favorite pair of shorts did have pockets, but they were sewn shut and impossible for me to use.
